KeepCalmandCarryOnwasamotivationalposterproducedbytheBritishgovernmentin1939inpreparationfortheSecondWorldWar.TheposterwasintendedtoraisethemoraleoftheBritishpublic,threatenedwithwidelypredictedmassairattacksonmajorcities.Although2.45millioncopieswereprinted,andalthoughtheBlitzdidinfacttakeplace,theposterwashardlyeverpubliclydisplayedandwaslittleknownuntilacopywasrediscoveredin2000atBarterBooks,abookshopinAlnwick.Ithassincebeenre-issuedbyanumberofprivatecompanies,andhasbeenusedasthedecorativethemeforarangeofproducts.

Itwasthoughtthatonlytwooriginalcopiessurviveduntilacollectionof20wasbroughtintotheAntiquesRoadshowin2012bythedaughterofanex-RoyalObserverCorpsmember.

TheKeepCalmandCarryOnposterwasdesignedbytheMinistryofInformationduringtheperiod27 Juneto6 July1939.Itwasproducedaspartofaseriesofthree"HomePublicity"posters(theothersread"YourCourage,YourCheerfulness,YourResolutionWillBringUsVictory"and"FreedomIsinPeril.DefendItWithAllYourMight").Eachpostershowedthesloganunderarepresentationofa"TudorCrown"(asymbolofthestate).Theywereintendedtobedistributedtostrengthenmoraleintheeventofawartimedisaster,suchasmassbombingofmajorcitiesusinghighexplosivesandpoisongas,whichwaswidelyexpectedwithinhoursofanoutbreakofwar.
AcareercivilservantnamedA.P.Waterfieldcameupwith"YourCourage"as"arallyingwar-crythatwillbringoutthebestineveryoneofusandputusinanoffensivemoodatonce".
DetailedplanningforthepostershadstartedinApril1939andtheeventualdesignswerepreparedaftermeetingsbetweenofficialsfromtheMinistryofInformationandHMTreasuryon26June1939andbetweenofficialsfromtheMinistryofInformationandHMSOon27June1939.Roughsoftheposterwerecompletedon6July1939,andthefinaldesignswereagreedbytheHomeSecretarySamuelHoare,1stViscountTemplewoodon4August1939.Printingbeganon23August1939,thedaythatNaziGermanyandtheUSSRsignedtheMolotov–RibbentropPact,andtheposterswerereadytobeplacedupwithin24hoursoftheoutbreakofwar.
Almost2,500,000copiesofKeepCalmandCarryOnwereprintedbetween23August1939and3September1939buttheposterwasnotsanctionedforimmediatepublicdisplay.Itwasinsteaddecidedthatcopiesofthepostershouldremainin"coldstorage"foruseafterseriousairraids(withresourcestransferredtoYourCourageandFreedomisinPeril).CopiesofKeepCalmandCarryOnwereretaineduntilApril1940,butstockswerethenpulpedaspartofthewiderPaperSalvagecampaign.
